Group wants to legal marijuana

AUSTIN (KXAN) - "It's not a war against drugs it's a war against people, it's a war against your personal liberties and personal freedom," shouted one pot supporter.

Hundreds turn out at the capital for a rally supporting legal marijuana.

The Third Annual Texas Cannabis Crusade was sponsored by "NORML," a group that promotes legalization.

The rally included a afternoon march through downtown.

Advocates say they have science on their side, claiming marijuana is a safer drug than many over-the-counter medications.

"The government comes out and says 'well, it's dangerous to be prescribing people medical marijuana when it's not FDA approved,' but nobody can die from it, all of the FDA approved medications out there people actually die from those," said one supporter.

Later this year California voters will consider full marijuana legalization - but NORML organizers say that's not an option in Texas.

They say marijuana users should come out of the shadows and push state representatives to reform the drug policy.
