Malaysia: Jail and rotan for burger seller caught with cannabis

An Indonesian escaped the gallows after he pleaded guilty in the High Court here to possessing 218gm of cannabis.

Muhamad Yusuf, who has been staying in Malaysia for 27 years, was sentenced to seven years in jail and 10 strokes of the rotan.

The 32-year-old pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis at a food stall in Kampung Cempedak, off Jalan Datuk Senu in Sentul, here at about 6.45pm on July 22 last year.

Muhamad, who sells burgers for a living, was initially charged with trafficking under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty.

However, he was later offered a reduced charge by the prosecution.

The man nodded and bowed several times after Judge Mohd Sofian Abd Razak passed sentence.

Judge Mohd Sofian ordered the jail term to commence from the date of arrest.
