Malaysia: Despatch clerk gets death for drug trafficking

The Star, Malaysia

Thursday 27 May 2010

GEORGE TOWN: A 29-year-old despatch clerk has been sentenced to death by a High Court here for trafficking in 4,619g of cannabis.

Judicial Commissioner Yaacob Md Sam yesterday found Helmi Jamaludin guilty of trafficking the drugs near a house in Zoo Road, Air Itam, at 9.45pm on July 12, 2007.

The drug was found in the basket of the motorcycle he was riding. The court said Helmi's defence was a bare denial and a mere after thought.

He was originally jointly charged with factory worker Alfitrisham Ahmad, 30, but the court on April 28 acquitted and discharged Alfitrisham.

In another court, Mohd Izzat Mohd Amin was acquitted and discharged of trafficking in 84kg of cannabis in a rented car near the Juru toll plaza in Seberang Prai at 4.47am on Sept 26, 2006.

Judicial Commissioner Mohd Amin Firdaus Abdullah found that the prosecution had failed to prove that Mohd Izzat had possession or knowledge of the drugs.
