Brunei: Malaysian Man Charged With Trafficking In 2kg Of Cannabis
Brunei Times Saturday 05 Jun 2010 The defendant, Jeffery Tang Siew Hock, 23, was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on May 20 at the basement of a shopping centre in Tanjong Bunut when they found him in possession of the drugs. He is currently represented by Defence Counsel Hj Zul-Sakarla Hj ZulKef lie. However, no plea was taken. Hock's family members were allowed a brief visit to the accused at the court cell yesterday before he was remanded at the Jerudong Prison. The 10-minute visit at the court cell followed Hj Zul's request before the Magistrate Zelda Harnita Skinner yesterday. The visit however was conducted in the presence of NCB officers. Hock's case will be mentioned again on June 17. Meanwhile, during a proceeding last week, the court ordered the release of another Chinese man who was arrested on May 24 in connection with the same NCB cannabis haul. He had been detained for a week. No charges were brought against him for the time being. However, as the investigations are still ongoing, the judge determined that the suspect was eligible for bail, pending a urine analysis and approval from the NCB. On May 20, the NCB confiscated in what has been called the largest cannabis seizure in bureau's history, two kilogrammes of the drug outside a shopping complex in Tanjong Bunut. The haul has an estimated street value of $200,000. The possession of more than 600 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking is a serious offence which may be punishable by death. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times http://www.brudirect.com/index.php/2010060622650/Local-News/malaysian-man-charged-with-trafficking-in-2kg-of-cannabis.html
