Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police have recorded a dramatic rise in the total amount of cannabis seized in the capital Kuala Lumpur in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2009, a news report said Tuesday.

Anti-narcotics police seized a total of 178.4 kilograms of the drug from January to March, compared to a mere 15.9 kilograms in the first three months of last year, anti-narcotics investigations chief Kang Chez Chiang was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.

During the same period, police also busted three international drug trafficking syndicates in the capital city, he said.

Malaysia's tough drug laws prescribe the mandatory death sentence for the trafficking of most types of drugs.
