Lagos, Nigeria - Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested 2,883 suspected drug traffickers in five month, between January and May 2010, according to agency spokesman Mitchell Ofoyeju.

Local newspapers Wednesday quoted him as saying in a statement that most of the suspects were young people and included 2,780 males and 103 females.

Also, he said 77,796.12kg of narcotic drugs were seized from the suspects, with cannabis forming the biggest chunk (77,267.04kg).

Psychotropic substances accounted for 419.59 kg of the seizures, while 82.281kg of cocaine and 27.21kg of heroin made up the balance.

Ofoyeju said 674 offenders were convicted by the law courts within the period.

Nigeria has recently stepped up its anti-drug war, resulting in higher number of suspects arrested.
