Various medical marijuana bills have been introduced in the Empire State over the past 12 years. The Assembly has previously passed legislation on two occasions, however, medical pot did not make it to the floor of either house for a vote this year.

Nonetheless, a new poll conducted by Cornell University found that nearly two-thirds of New Yorkers are in favor of medical marijuana.

The greatest support for medical pot was found in upstate residents (67 percent – as opposed to 62 percent of downstate residents). 66 percent of Democrats support legalization for medical use while 48 percent of Republicans are against it.

Additionally, the poll found that more men supported medical cannabis than women and higher income households were more likely to favor medical marijuana legislation.

A previous poll conducted by Quinnipiac University in February found that 71 percent of New York voters were in favor of legalizing medical marijuana.
