Three Indonesians were sentenced to death by the High Court here for drug trafficking involving 1,858.6gm of cannabis in Sungai Petani five years ago.

Justice Datuk Zamani A. Rahim passed the sentence yesterday after ruling that the men "lied through their teeth" when making their defence.

He said he did not believe the testimony of Amri Alamsyah, 42, Iskandar Ibrahim, 33, and Muhammadiah Hassan, 31, who had claimed that they had gone to meet a man at a restaurant in Sungai Petani for a roof repair job when they were arrested.

The three, all from Aceh, testified that they went in a car driven by Amri to meet the man and were arrested upon arrival.

They claimed they only knew about the cannabis after it was shown to them at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters.

Zamani said the men had lied through their teeth when they told the unbelievable story in their defence.

He found them guilty of trafficking in 1,858.6gm of cannabis in front of a motorcycle shop on Jalan Kampung Baru in Sungai Petani on April 6, 2005.

The men, who were represented by Rafidi Mohamad, were calm when Zamani delivered the sentence.

Zamani said the drugs, in two slabs, were found in a plastic bag on the floor of the car driven by Amri.

He also said the three had failed to rebut the statement by one of the prosecution's witnesses who testified that Muhammadiah had told him that he sold cannabis at RM2,500 per slab and had asked for RM5,000 for the two slabs.

He said the witness also told the court that Muhammadiah had admitted that Amri and Iskandar were his business partners when the witness asked him who they were during their meeting on the day of the arrest.

He said the court was also told that when the witness asked Muhammadiah to show him the drug, Iskandar took out the plastic bag that contained the drugs and showed them to him.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Norshuhada Mohd Yatim.

Rafidi said the trio would appeal against the conviction.
