Malaysia: Model Jailed Seven Years For Cannabis Possession

A model was sentenced to seven years jail by the Sessions Court here on Friday after she was found guilty of possessing 10 slabs of cannabis, last year.

Judge Muhammad Sekeri Mamat had down the sentence after finding the prosecution had proved its case beyond all reasonable doubt against accused Nor Azlina Noor Akhmad, 28.

He ordered the jail sentence to run from the date of her arrest on Jan 20, 2009 but exempted from a caning sentence because she is a woman.

In mitigation, defence counsel M.K Thas urged the court to impose as shorter shorter jail saying Nor Azlina was the sole breadwinner in the family and her mother needed to be cared for.

Nor Azlina was caught with the drugs weighing 76 grammes at No.12-11-12, Hartamas Regency Condo 1, Persiaran Dutamas, Off Jalan Duta, Sri Hartamas, at 11.30pm on Jan 20 last year.

She was convicted under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for maximum life imprisonment and not less that 10 strokes of the rotan.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Yong Ann Nee prosecuted.
