ALOR SETAR: A clerk who was charged with trafficking in cannabis four years ago cried when he was sentenced to death on Sunday.

Zakaria Ahmad, 32, could not hold back his tears when he saw his mother and three siblings crying after Judicial Commissioner Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab delivered the verdict.

Zakaria was found guilty of trafficking 2,207.1g of cannabis on Feb 8, 2006 at a petrol station in Taman Sejati Indah in Sungai Petani.

He was charged under Section 39B of the Drugs Dangerous Act 1952.

Mohd Zaki when delivering the sentence said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

He said the court could not accept Zakaria's defence that he had gone to the petrol station that morning to buy cigarettes before heading to his girlfriend’s house.

“There was no mention of the girlfriend during the prosecution case when the defence counsel was cross-examining the investigating officer,” he said.

After the court was adjourned, Zakaria hugged his mother and siblings inside the courtroom.

The meeting turned emotional when he got down on his knees while resting his head on his mother’s lap and asked for her forgiveness.

His counsel Naran Singh had to console the mother and son who sobbed uncontrollably.
