UK: GEORGE MICHAEL JAILED OVER DRUG CRASH Nigel Pauley The Star Wednesday 15 Sep 2010 Michael, 47, had been found "sweating and spaced out" behind the wheel of his wrecked £65,000 Range Rover after driving into a shop. District Judge John Perkins told him he had taken a "dangerous and unpredictable mix" of prescription drugs and cannabis and he had "no other option" but to imprison him. He added: "It does not appear that you took proper steps to deal with what is clearly an addiction to cannabis. "“That's a mistake which puts you and, on this occasion, the public at risk. "I must therefore consider whether there are circumstances where I could suspend the sentence. "I have come to the conclusion, with regret, that there are no such circumstances." Michael admitted driving while unfit through drugs and possessing two cannabis cigarettes when he appeared in court last month. He has a previous conviction for the same offence. Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court dealt with him under his real name of Georgios Panayiotou, of Hampstead, north London. Judge Perkins said he took into account that Michael had checked into a clinic after the crash to seek help for anxiety, depression and insomnia, which had led him to depend on prescription drugs. Michael's long-term partner Kenny Goss, sitting nearby, threw his head into his hands in tears as the sentence was passed. Fans in the public gallery sobbed, while some outside attempted to break through a police barricade to get to the van taking Michael to nearby Pentonville Prison. Michael will serve four weeks and spend the remainder of the sentence on licence. He was also banned from driving for five years and was ordered to pay a £1,250 fine, £100 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. Last night the sentence was slammed as "too lenient" by the road safety charity Brake. Spokesman Joel Hickman said: "Drug-driving has been found to significantly impair driver concentration, reaction times and mood. It is an extremely dangerous activity." http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view/153866/George-Michael-jailed-over-drug-crash/
