UK: Sell cannabis in shops, says drug expert

Cannabis should be sold in shops, just like alcohol, argues a leading expert on the drug's effects.

Under such a plan, users would be given a government permit - like a driving or TV licence.

Neuropharmacologist Roger Pertwee says this would allow the sale of safe cannabis and screen out those it could harm.

"The alternatives are the status quo, tougher laws, or legalised," said Prof Pertwee, of Aberdeen University.

"My view is we should go for legalised, like alcohol and tobacco. It would be for recreational use and for selfmedication.

"At the moment cannabis is in the hands of criminals - which is crazy.

"Cannabis is not going to be more dangerous if it is handled properly."

Prof Pertwee will present his latest research to the British Science Festival in Birmingham on Friday.
