US: Medical Marijuana Supporters Rally in Phoenix
Myfoxphoenix Saturday 25 Sep 2010 In downtown Phoenix on Saturday, supporters of the measure rallied to get their message across to the public. "If we were trying to take away people's prescriptions, there would be an uproar over this," says Travis Pollock from Accessible in AZ. They say marijuana as medicine should be readily available for those who need it. Eric Frank has cerebral palsy, and says he smokes marijuana. It helps him to be a more productive member of society. "For me, it's not about getting high. The image of people with bongs and passing joints around needs to be erased," says Frank. "Cannabis helps me get up the morning, gets me through my day. Just as Vicodin or Codeine. People take prescription drugs to help them through the day, and they're legalized. But just because something isn't legal doesn't mean it's bad." But not everyone agrees that the needs of a minority makes the argument for legalizing pot, even on a limited scale. Jaime Vinck works with drug addicts at Journey Healing Centers and worries the majority of new users would be those without chronic or terminal conditions like cancer or HIV. "I would be concerned it would put a stamp of approval on the drug, and it will make it more available to teenagers as they go into mom's medicine cabinet," says Vinck. http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpp/news/elections/medical-marijuana-rally-9-25-2010
