Meeting Mr Nice

Martin Brunt

My efforts to warn my kids of the potentially harmful effects of cannabis have always been slightly undermined by my own, brief, student habits.

I hope they never meet the former drugs baron Howard Marks, who still smokes dope regularly.

At 65 he is still the charming, funny, erudite story-teller he always was, still campaigning for legalisation, still close to his ex-wife and kids and now happily promoting the film of Mr Nice, his best-selling autobiography.

He looks fit and tanned and just about carried off the Topman clothes he wore when we met.

He's also just embarked on another theatre tour where his opening gambit is: "Are there any plain-clothes police officers in tonight? No? Good."

Then he takes out a long spliff and lights it.

Marks insists he never used violence during his criminal days and the idea that anyone got hurt, hooked or worse because of the drugs he imported has been airbrushed from his life story.

He is a remarkable survivor.
