Prop 19 update: Eric Holder says feds will prosecute if Prop 19 passes (video)

Here is the latest update on California's Prop 19.

Attorney General Eric Holder says the federal government will continue to prosecute marijuana or 'pot' crimes in California even if Prop 19 passes. The basic argument is that a state cannot make legal what the federal government has ruled 'illegal.' If California chooses to pass Prop 19 (Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010) on November 2, 2010, Attorney General Eric Holder warns that the federal government will not 'look the other way.'

If California citizens vote in favor of Proposition 19, there is undoubtedly a showdown between state and federal governments to be expected.

In a letter written by Eric Holder and obtained by the Associated Press, Eric Holder wrote, "We will vigorously enforce the CSA [Controlled Substance Act] against those individuals and organizations that possess, manufacture or distribute marijuana for recreational use, even if such activities are permitted under state law."

Attorney General Eric Holder also warned about the dangers of drug trafficking that would arise following the state’s legalization of marijuana. Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Meg Whitman, both California gubernatorial candidates are in opposition to Prop 19.
