Schapelle Corby's hopes of release have received a boost with reports the Indonesian foreign ministry has supported her appeal for leniency.

The ministry's recommendation for her early release on humanitarian grounds will be considered by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when he meets with several government officials this week, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Corby, 33, has maintained her innocence throughout her 2004 arrest and 2005 conviction.

She is serving a 20-year sentence at Kerobokan prison for importing 4.2kg of cannabis to Bali.

The former Gold Coast beauty student cited severe depression in her latest appeal for clemency amid growing fears over her mental state.

Last month, foreign minister Kevin Rudd discussed Corby's imprisonment with Indonesian counterpart Marty Natalegawa in New York.
