Netherlands: Let cannabis cafes grow their own weed, says mayor
DutchNews.nl Wednesday 10 Nov 2010 The cafes should become closed clubs which produce marijuana for their members, the mayor says. At the moment, the police turn a blind eye to people growing five plants for their own use. So coffee shops could grow five plants for each of their members instead, the mayor says. New policy The new cabinet is planning to turn all cannabis cafes, known as coffee shops, into members only clubs in a bid to keep out tourists and under-age smokers. Eindhoven is one of 10 cities which have been singled out to carry out experiments with different ways of keeping organised crime out of the coffee shop system. The government has given the city €645,000 to fund the experiments. Other measures Van Gijzel also wants to see an end to cash payments and limit the sale to young users to three grammes, rather than the five grammes allowed at present. Eindhoven council will debate the plan on November 23. http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2010/11/let_cannabis_cafes_grow_their.php
