Switzerland: Rappaz hit with CHF 44,000 bill in jail

World Radio Switzerland

Friday 10 Sep 2010

Drugs campaigner Bernard Rappaz is to be landed with a bill for CHF 44,000—the cost of guarding his home while he was under house arrest for a month.

The Valais man went on hunger strike in prison for a hundred days to protest his sentence for growing large quantities of marijuana.

Speaking in cantonal parliament of Valais today, cantonal justice minister Esther Waeber-Kalbermatten said he'll also have to pay a part of the hospital costs.

That's a figure of CHF 16,000 for when he was transferred to Geneva hospital after refusing food.

Rappaz is currently back behind bars, where Lausanne judges have given the go-ahead for officers to force feed him.
