Switzerland: Rappaz back behind bars

Jordan Davis

World Radio Switzerland

Thursday 26 Aug 2010

Convicted marijuana activist Bernard Rappaz is back behind bars this afternoon.

The Federal Supreme Court rejected his appeal to stay at home while awaiting a clemency hearing later this year.

The court also said Rappaz can be force-fed if he resumes his hunger strike, as WRS's Jordan Davis reports.

Through his lawyer, Rappaz has pledged he'll once again stop eating behind bars.

In fact last month he was on a 110-day hunger strike when he was sent home by Valais Justice Minister Estheer Waeber Kalbermatten pending the outcome of his appeal to the supreme court.

The head of Swiss medical association says he's ethically opposed to doctors force-feeding prisoners at the behest of law enforcement. But Waeber-Kalbermatten says she hopes dialogue with doctors will yield a solution if it's needed.

Rappaz for his part has promised to commit suicide if he’s force fed. He is at the beginning of a 5-year sentence on drug charges, a sentence he says is politically motivated.
