World Radio Switzerland

Wednesday 21 Jul 2010

The prisoner who has been on a prolonged hunger strike could be allowed to go home to recuperate.

Officials in the canton of Valais have approved a request allowing Bernard Rappaz to leave a secure hospital unit.

The measure now has to be approved by the Federal Court.

If Rappaz is allowed to return home, he would be monitored 24-hours a day.

Rappaz has ended his hunger strike which he began more than 100 days ago.

He undertook it in protest against his prison sentence for growing marijuana.
