Switzerland: Political backtracking as drugs campaigner Rappaz goes home

World Radio Switzerland

Thursday 22 Jul 2010

Bernard Rappaz, the Valaisan hemp grower sentenced to a five year jail term, has ended his 100 day hunger strike. He called off the protest after being allowed to serve his sentence under house arrest pending a federal supreme court ruling on the affair, expected at the end of the month. The decision to let Rappaz go home was taken by the canton's justice minister, Esther Waeber-Kalbermatten, who for weeks said Rappaz wouldn't be released. Georges Tavernier is president of the Valais Liberal Party.
