Switzerland: Hunger striker's fate to be decided today

World Radio Switzerland

Thursday 18 Nov 2010

The Valais cantonal government will decide this afternoon whether to pardon Bernard Rappaz.

He's the convicted hemp grower who's been on a hunger strike for more than 80 days in protest of his sentence.

Very few of the officials have made their views public—with some saying they don't want to condone Rappaz's "blackmail," or that he must "save himself" by stopping his hunger strike.

But the president of the Social Democrats in the Valais government says she’ll say yes to a request for clemency.

She says she doesn't support Rappaz, but wants to save a life.
