Switzerland: Rappaz says he'll end hunger strike for break

World Radio Switzerland

Monday 22 Nov 2010

Bernard Rappaz is ready to end his hunger strike in exchange for a six-month break in his prison sentence.

The convicted drug trafficker’s lawyer told the SonntagsZeitung that Rappaz wants a short break to recover and then will serve the rest of his sentence.

The decision to suspend the sentence is within the jurisdiction of the Head of Security for canton Valais, Esther Waeber-Kalbermatten.

Rappaz has already exhausted all other avenues for an early release.

He is in a hospital in Geneva, in the third month of a hunger strike, protesting his five and a half year prison sentence.
