UK: Drug smoker says cannabis helped his medical condition

Hastings Observer

Monday 22 Nov 2010

A CANNABIS smoker has been given a conditional discharge after he was found in possession of the drug.

Steven Ward, 51, of Cornwallis Gardens, was found with the drug at a property in Devonshire Road on November 3, Hastings Magistrates Court heard.

Police entering the property could smell cannabis and found Ward with a quantity of the drug and a couple of pipes on the table.

Mark Kateley, prosecuting, said: "He suffers from a medical condition.

"He says it helps him with that.

"He was quite frank about his possession."

Ward, who pleaded guilty to one count of possession a Class B drug, has previous convictions for possessing cannabis, the court heard.

Aiden Harvey, defending, said: "It was a small amount, an early guilty plea and he was cooperative with the police."

Ward was given a conditional discharge for six months and ordered to pay £40 costs.

Magistrates ordered the drugs be destroyed.
