Willie Nelson charged with cannabis possession

Willie Nelson, the country singer, has been charged with possession of cannabis at the age of 77.

Nelson was arrested after six ounces of the drug was found on his tour bus in Texas, according to a US Border Patrol spokesman.

The bus had pulled into a police checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas, where an officer smelled cannabis when a door was opened.

A search of the bus found the drug and Nelson was among three people arrested, Border Patrol spokesman Bill Brooks said.

The local sheriff Arvin West said Nelson claimed the cannabis was his.

The singer, who was born in Texas, was held briefly before being bailed for 2,500 dollars (1,500 UKP.)

A spokeswoman for Nelson, who is also an author, actor and poet, declined to comment.
