Drugs case 'should not have come to court'
Newmarket Journal Friday 03 Dec 2010 Duty solicitor Jacqui Baldwin, acting on behalf of 20-year-old Ryan Houghton, of Tanners Lane, said his appearance before Ely Magistrates' Court on Thursday for possession of cannabis was unnecessary and should have been dealt with by way of a police caution. She said: "It's his first time in trouble with the police as an adult and it should have been appropriate for a police caution. "He has shown pure remorse and has no conviction or caution as an adult. This should have been dealt with without the need for him to attend court." Laura Mardell, prosecuting, said the decision to charge Houghton was made by the custody sergeant at the time of the offence and said it was not known why a police caution was not considered. Houghton was released on unconditional bail and will reappear at the same court on December 9. http://www.newmarketjournal.co.uk/news/local/drugs_case_should_not_have_come_to_court_1_1758466
