An amateur footballer was spared prison for dealing cannabis – just as his wife went into labour with their first child.

Yousif Ahmad, 26, was caught at a Cumbrian service station with £4,000 worth of leaf cannabis on February 9.

He was taking it from Manchester to his home in Glasgow, where he planned to share it with his team-mates.

Ahmad appeared at Carlisle Crown Court yesterday, as news arrived that his wife was about to give birth.

Judge Paul Batty QC said: "This was a very large amount of cannabis and those travelling in order to distribute it could normally expect a lengthy custodial sentence."

Instead he received a 12-month probation order, because he had not planned to sell the drug for profit. He was also told to pay £500 towards court costs.

Judge Batty added: "You and your fellow footballers were all avid cannabis users, so you were effectively bulk buying. The amount of cannabis involved here, it’s surprising any of you could see a ball, let alone kick one."
