Zambia: Farmers top 2010 drug dealers list

Peasant Farmers have been identified as the worst perpetrators of drug trafficking in the year 2010. The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has since expressed concern over the increasing number of peasant farmers being used to grow psychotropic substances.

DEC Public Relations Manager John Nyawali says the commission during the Christmas weekend arrested eleven people for cultivating and trafficking in different quantities of cannabis weighing over eight tones.

It is in this vein that the DEC is considering working with Agriculture Extension Officers to conduct massive sensitization campaigns over the dangers of growing psychotropic substances.

Among those that were arrested include Boniface Tabama of Mungambwa Village in Chief Matako Sichili area in Sesheke district.

The recent arrest is the largest seizure the Commission has made this year.
