UK: The biggest drugs haul we've ever had

North West Evening Mail

Wednesday 02 Feb 2011

South Cumbria Targeting Unit gave the Evening Mail an exclusive look at the abandoned drugs farm in the disused three-storey building in Abbey Road.

One of Barrow's biggest drugs production operations was discovered yesterday morning in the office which is being advertised for let.

Police are investigating who is behind the organised crime.

The windows have been boarded up and the electricity has been switched off, but torchlight exposes large ventilation tubes, piles of bagged fertiliser and many tubs of plant feed in the corridors and landing areas at the top of staircases.

It gives an early indication of what lies beyond the many doors of this massive building.

A flash of a torch into some 12 rooms highlights 1,000 or more wilted cannabis plants.

There is row after row of the class B drug in its various stages of production.

The rooms are also full of hanging UV lights and silver foil-lined walls, used to reflect the maximum light, and irrigation and ventilation systems.

In some rooms there are seedling pots, in others half-grown and fully-grown plants.

There is also abandoned kitchen equipment and a living area with mattresses and bedding left on the floor in a building that was a Trading Standards office almost four years ago.

Police said in typical cases, cannabis farm teams come in and set up the building to their needs then gardeners are left to do the growing of the plants.

They said this commonly involves illegal workers.

DC Mark Newsome, of South Cumbria Targeting Unit, said the plants would have a value of £1m or more.

He said: "This is what you would class as a professional set up.

"There are different stages of rooms for different stages of growth and rooms for housing.

"This is certainly the most sophisticated set up I've seen.

"It's significant, it's the biggest one we have had."

DC Craig Barrass, also of the unit, said: "This is organised crime on a big scale.

"There are tubs of feed which have been left which are worth £50 each, and a lot has been left."
