UK: Growing weed is a victimless crime, says dad

A MAN who was convicted of cultivating cannabis in his wardrobe has said that growing your own weed is a ‘victimless crime’.

Christoper Newton-Jordan, aged 22, of Redshank Lane, Birchwood, appeared at Warrington Magistrates' Court last month after police found seven plants in his wardrobe.

He pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis, which was for personal use, but following the hearing said that the Class B drug should be decriminalised.

Jordan also hit out because the court case was printed in the Warrington Guardian and said: "I genuinely believe this was a victimless crime.

"I'll do the punishment, but didn't realise public scrutiny was part of the deal.

"I think weed should be decriminalised because why sell everything you need to make it grow, yet make the growing illegal?

"You very rarely read about 'man off his head on weed attacks pensioner' or anything like that.

"I certainly feel it is a lot less of a drug compared to alcohol and cigarettes."

Jordan first started smoking weed aged 16 when he moved into Park Lodge hostel. After a break he started again in 2008 after a relationship ended.

He says weed keeps him in a happy mood and that he smokes around two spliffs every other day.

According to Jordan, finding out how to grow cannabis is easy to research online."

He also said people grow their own because penalties are not harsh enough.

"Community service is just a slap on the wrist and won't stop people from growing weed," he said.

"I was hoping I'd go to prison or get a tag because that would be much more of a punishment."

But despite calling for cannabis to be made legal, Jordan is trying to get off the drug.

"I'll continue smoking cigarettes, but I'm trying to get off the weed again, as I'm trying to get regular access to see my daughter.

"I also have plans to go to the Adult Drugs Team in Warrington.

"The fact is people smoke weed these days to look cool or because everyone else does, but some of the dealers these days are younger than me and that says it all really."
