UK Justice Minister Shuns Justice for Cannabis Users Campaign

Legalise Cannabis Alliance

LCA NEWS

Saturday 05 Feb 2011

Members and supporters of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA), numbering almost 4000, are outraged by the rejection of a meeting with The Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke MP, Minister of Justice, after repeated requests.

Alun Buffry, co-founder and a spokesperson for the LCA said: "After writing to request a meeting to discuss the lack of Justice and equity in law in the way cannabis users are treated compared with users of alcohol, all we received was a telephone reply saying that his diary is full.

"There are many millions of cannabis users in the UK, the vast majority of whom report benefit from the plant, and all are at threat of prosecution despite the fact that they do no harm. On the other hand, there is a considerable negative impact on the individual and social welfare of those that chose to drink alcohol legally, under the protection of the law.

"They have off-licenses and public houses and are allowed to brew their own, whereas cannabis users are forced to risk imprisonment by growing their own or exposure to the world of crime.

"We think it is about time that the Government dealt with this discrepancy in law and justice, and righted it. That is what we want to talk about directly with the Minister but he rejects us saying there is no space in his diary.

"It is a very sad and bad situation considering the number of people in the UK that have used, use or may well use, cannabis.

"We would like to offer Mr Clarke a ten-year diary, but we don't expect him to last that long in office."

Following a vote amongst members, the LCA is planning to re-register as a political party in the UK in a few weeks time. The LCA was previously registered from 1999 to 2006 and fought in over 80 elections. In Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in an- all-up council election, LCA candidate Michael Skipper received a vote from 18% of the voters.

"Since the politicians refuse to represent us and most even to talk with us, we have to return to the ballot box to be heard," said Mr Buffry.

"If they won't even talk to us despite their pledges about an all-inclusive society, we will fight to oust them."
