Bristol Professor Criticises Drug Regulation
Jack FM Thursday 17 Feb 2011 He's been speaking in Bath about the dangers of alcohol and tobacco and has criticised the government's approach to drink and drugs, claiming that too much money is spent on tackling drug use, when alcohol is the bigger problem in Britain. "Alcohol is a much bigger killer because it's actually a much more toxic substance" he said. "If alcohol was invented today, it would be banned under the current rules because it is so toxic." Professor David Nutt suggests easing regulations surrounding cannabis and tighten those around booze will help to address the health problems associated with both: "We need a broad brush approach, we need to deal with the problem of getting in to drug use, whether it's alcohol or whether it's other drugs, by regulating access, reducing access to alcohol and trying to give some controlled access to cannabis through things like coffee shops." It's not the first time the former University of Bristol Professor has made controversial comments about drugs. It was during his time at the university in 2009, that he was sacked from his position on the government's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. The then Home Secretary, Alan Johnson fired him after he said that statistically, horse riding was more dangerous than taking ecstasy and that cannabis created only a small risk of psychotic illness. http://www.jackbristol.com/newscentre/bristols-news/bristol-professor-criticises-drug-regulation-5630
