Chile says it won't legalize drugs

People's Daily

Thursday 03 Mar 2011

Chile's government said Wednesday it won't legalize drugs as a latest UN report warned of increased cocaine consumption in the country.

"This government is not going to legalize any drug," Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter told reporters in response to the report issued by UN International Narcotics Control Board (INCB).

According to the report, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay account for aboout 10 to 20 percent of the world's total cocaine consumption. It also found 3.21 percent of the Chileans aged between 15 and 16 are cocaine consumers.

Cocaine consumption won't be stopped by legalizing it, Hinzpeter said, adding that causes of drug addiction are "poverty and lack of education."

The minister also cited progress in the anti-drug Cannabis Plan 2011, under which 79,834 marijuana plants were seized in January and February, an increase of 2,956 plants year on year.
