Bulgaria among top cannabis producers in Europe, report says

Sofia Echo

Thursday 03 Mar 2011

Bulgaria was among the Balkan countries that produced the bulk of cannabis used in Central and Eastern Europe, the annual report for 2010 by the International Narcotics Control Board said on March 2.

Trafficking in cannabis remained at a significant level in Europe, where cultivation was on the rise, especially indoors and on a large scale, the report said. But despite being one of the biggest producers of the plant, Bulgaria was also among the countries with the lowest cannabis abuse rate on the continent, according to the report.

Bulgaria was also one of the major transit routes for heroin from Afghanistan and cocaine from Latin America.

"According to Europol, the number of nationals of Balkan countries involved incocaine trafficking has grown in recent years. Albania, in addition to having a historical role in heroin trafficking along the Balkan route, has reportedly been used as a storage area for consignments of cocaine. The greater involvement of organised criminal groups may indicate that the infrastructure established in the Balkan area for smuggling cannabis and opiates (particularly heroin) is now being used for smuggling increasingly larger quantities of cocaine," the report said.

Balkan ports were being used increasingly to ship cocaine into Europe, the report said, recalling the 2009 seizure of 1020 bottles containing a mixture of cocaine and wine shipped from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, to Varna.
