US: The leader in marijuana movement?

Colorado is making serious moves to become the world leader in the marijuana movement, according to attendees, exhibitors and organizers at this past weekend’s Medical Cannabis Cup.

The Medical Cannabis Cup that was put on by High Times Magazine brought businesses and consumers involved in medical marijuana ? and marijuana in general ?to the EXDO Event Center, 1399 35th St. The event was in parts a marijuana smoke out, educational seminar, shopping center and serious competition involving all things marijuana.

“I can’t believe this (Medical Cannabis Cup) is actually here in Denver,” said self-proclaimed pothead Jeremy Wells. “It’s a dream come true.”

Dan Skye, executive editor of High Times Magazine, said he was “incredibly impressed” by how the Denver Cannabis Cup went. Several members of the High Times staff declared Denver and Colorado as being at the forefront of the marijuana movement over the two-day event.

“Right now we always say California is number one, Colorado is number two,” Skye said of the perception on states leading the medical marijuana movement. “But the cohesiveness of the medical marijuana population in Colorado I think far exceeds California. It’s a state where I think the activists really have control.”

California voters rejected a ballot initiative last year that would have legalized marijuana in the state. There have been two marijuana legalization initiatives proposed in Colorado for the 2012 ballot; polls have showed that approximately 50-percent of Coloradans support such a measure. Both California and Colorado allow marijuana use for medical purposes.

The Medical Cannabis Cup mixed exhibitors hawking marijuana-related gear ? from cutting edge pipes to clothing boasting witty marijuana sayings ? and informative seminars on topics like the legal and medical issues related to medical marijuana. What separated the Medical Cannabis Cup from Colorado’s other medical marijuana-related events was that it had a separate area where medical marijuana cardholders could smoke the drug on site.

A security guard who let attendees into the designated marijuana smoking section estimated that 800 people went in and out of the area while he was working yesterday. He said he saw nothing bad happen while working.

Mike (who did not give his last name) of Incredibowl, a local business that manufacturers marijuana smoking devices, added that the crowd at the Cannabis Cup was significantly different from the one he encountered during Spring Break.

“It’s just a different vibe, it’s much more laid back,” he said.

Prior to an event-closing ceremony that awarded everything from the best marijuana strains to the best marijuana-related gear in Denver, event organizers tested audience members’ patience with a High Times documentary, a comedian that horrendously bombed and Skye’s hosting duties that had one attendee asking if he was ever funny in his entire life. But, overall, everyone only had good things to say about the event that will likely become a popular annual happening in Denver.

“The fact that it seems to be such a legal, open setting for marijuana is amazing,” said Shane Schlaufman, owner of Mountain Mile High Medical Caregivers, a dispensary in Colorado Springs. “You’ve got police officers walking around in full acceptance of what’s going on, it’s just a great vibe all around in general. And the fact that everyone is so comfortable, everyone is happy and just about everyone is stoned is really something.”
