UK:Norwich OAP grew cannabis for himself and sick wife, court told
Eastern Daily Press Sunday 03 Apr 2011 Arthur Palmer, 66, was found to be growing 117 plants in his garden and greenhouse in Intwood Lane which he said was mainly for his own use and that of his partner, who suffers from Huntington’s Disease, as she found the drug helped her condition. Palmer also admitted that he had supplied a few friends. Martin Ivory, prosecuting at Norwich Crown Court, said that as well as the plants, police also found dried cannabis material in some outbuildings. He said the total estimated value of the cannabis crop was £22,000. Palmer admitted production of cannabis and was given a 12-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months. Michael Clare, for Palmer, described him as a "child of the 60s" who had been smoking cannabis for years and said: "He became engrossed in the horticultural aspect of growing seeds. "This is not a case where police were acting on any information. They were driving by and smelled it. "That is how blatant and naive it was." He also called Palmer to give evidence and he told the court that he had now turned his life around and no longer smoked cannabis since his arrest. He said: "There is no way I will do it again. It has got me into a lot of trouble." Palmer said that at the time he felt depressed and isolated but had now sought help from counsellors. Sentencing him, Recorder Guy Ayers said: "It would appear that since the 1960s you have been someone who has personally taken cannabis. "It is also clear that you are someone who, until very recently, has not seen taking cannabis as something that should be illegal." However he accepted that after hearing Palmer give evidence he had now had a change of heart and realised that growing and taking cannabis has got him into trouble and, as the main carer to his partner, he did not want to risk a prison term. Recorder Ayers said: "She is more important to you than your cannabis." He added: "You have got to make certain that you have got your priorities right now." http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/norwich_oap_grew_cannabis_for_himself_and_sick_wife_court_told_1_850202
