Man took cannabis to relieve pain
Shields Gazette Thursday 07 Apr 2011 Ian Campbell, of Brownlow Road, South Shields, told magistrates he has used the Class B drug since being crushed by a lorry and damaging the vertebrae in his spine. The 38-year-old was arrested by police after his car sped away from them. When he was caught and search, officers found the drug on him. He pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court. Glenda Beck, prosecuting, said police on patrol in McAnany Avenue, South Shields, saw a car speed away. They searched the area and found the car outside a house in nearby Brownlow Road, with Campbell getting out. Ms Beck said: "He was strongly smelling of cannabis and they found traces of cannabis bush on him. "They searched the house and found more cannabis. "In his police interview he didn't identify himself as the driver, but said it was his car and he’d been out in it. "He said the drugs were for his own use." Rachel Gedney, defending, said: "He is 38 and has entered a guilty plea. He should get credit for that. "Essentially he had a small amount of cannabis for his own use. "Many years ago he had quite a horrific accident at work, where he was crushed by a lorry and the vertebrae in his back were damaged. "He is medicated with morphine, but also uses cannabis to alleviate the pain." Magistrates fined Campbell £100 and ordered him to pay £80 costs. http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/crime/man_took_cannabis_to_relieve_pain_1_3261227
