UK: Police discover two cannabis factories over 24-hour period in Basildon

Essex Enquirer

Friday 15 Apr 2011

POLICE have uncovered two cannabis factories as part of a crackdown on drugs across Basildon.

On Thursday morning police discovered a factory after executing a search warrant at an address in Wickford Place, Pitsea.

Police seized 77 plants and a complex hydroponics set up as part of a crack down on drugs in the local area.

Sgt Dan McHugh, of the Pitsea neighbourhood policing team, said: "We executed a warrant as a result of information received by the community. Drugs use and supply blights our communities, and can bring with it a whole other host of problems for residents, so we are keen to stamp it out. If you know about anyone doing such illegal activities in your area, call us or Crimestoppers anonymously and we will act."

A 43-year-old man from Pitsea arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis has been released on police bail until the end of June.

The discovery came just a day after officers discovered a smaller set up during a routine visit to a property in Laindon.

Officers visited the address in Shepeshall, Laindon, with St Georges Community Housing Anti-Social Behaviour Team on Wednesday and smelt cannabis. After investigating they uncovered a small cultivation set up, with approximately seven cannabis plants and a hydroponics set up.

Pc Leigh Day, neighbourhood constable for Lee Chapel North, said: "We often work in partnership with St Georges and visit residents if they are experiencing any problems or causing any problems for the community. If you have any crime concerns in your area, then let us know and we will deal with those suspected of committing crime robustly."

A 42-year-old man from Laindon was arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries until mid June.
