POLICE found 77 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £20,000 after storming a house in Pitsea.

Officers smashed the door of the house, in Wickford Place, at 9.50am yesterday and found the plants in two of the three bedrooms.

The plants were concealed behind tarpaulin in the rooms.

Neighbours said they heard shouting and banging as police executed their warrant and arrested a man.

One neighbour, who didn't want to be named, said: "I saw two police running down the road and then there was banging.

"I looked out the window and saw all the police.

"They were really good. About five minutes later they walked along and told us what was going on.

"They said they were sorry about the noise, but they can make as much noise as they want if they get rid of it all.

"We don't want drugs around here – we are sick to death of it. I'm so glad it is off the streets."

Acting Sergeant Dan McHugh said the house had a complex set-up and officers suspected electricity was being stolen by bypassing the meter.

Sgt McHugh said: "We are cracking down on drug supply.

A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and taken into police custody.
