UK: Huge Croydon drugs ring weeded out by police
Surrey Today Tuesday 19 Apr 2011 After a tip off officers stormed into disused shop on Bensham Lane and sniffed out 140 cannabis plants being secretly grown downstairs. Police arrested two men at the shop on suspicion of growing cannabis after the raid last Wednesday (April 13) –they were later bailed. After officers busted the drugs den police made series of raids across Croydon where officers stormed homes. Police arrested two teenagers, a 15-year-old for theft by finding and 17 year-old boy was arrested for possession of a Class B drug, after the raids in Hughes Walk, Drake Road and Ockley Road last Thursday. The youngster teen was bailed and the 17-year-old given a final warning. But officers managed to charge a 54 year old man with possessing a Class A drug and he will later appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court. Sergeant Jim Knowles from Broad Green Safer Neighbourhood Team said; "Crime and fear of crime have a big impact on how people feel about an area and it's important for us to show the local community that we take their concerns seriously and will take the necessary action." The week of activity is part of Operation Refresh, which is focusing on the five wards of Bensham Manor, Broad Green, Selhurst, Thornton Heath and West Thornton. As part of Operation Refresh, and the ongoing commitment to regenerate London Road and the surrounding area, the operation was designed to tackle crime as well as the wider issue of making the area a safer and cleaner place. Since Operation Refresh began in September 2010, there has been an overall reduction in total crime of 7 per cent.
