Rabat, Morocco - The Royal Gendarmerie of Morocco has seized 1.3 tonne of "chira", a resin of cannabis, about to be transported from the coast of Asilah, in the north of the country, PANA learnt here Wednesday from an informed source. The gendarmes stormed the traffickers who were loading the drugs that was packed in plastic-coated parcels suspected to be destined for the European market, the source said. One of the traffickers has been arrested, while his accomplices escaped. According to the source, the Gendarmerie also seized the vessel and has commenced an investigation.

Morocco is reported to be the first producer-exporter of the cannabis resin.

According to a joint investigation of the National Development Agency of the provinces of the North and the European Union (EU), the sales, in Europe, of the hashish produced in Morocco could generate US$ 12 billion, an amount that represents one third of Morocco's GDP.
