Australia: Roll up for MardiGrass

Northern Rivers Echo

Thursday 21 Apr 2011

MardiGrass is nearly here!

With big business ruling the country and convincing people that pricing carbon will destroy their lifestyle; with coal seam gas mining embraced by the party supposedly looking after country people's interests, Nimbin's MardiGrass (April 30 and May 1) is looking like the sanest show in town.

MardiGrass is a rally against the prohibition of one of the most maligned but useful plants on the planet – cannabis. But this rally is done in true Nimbin style and is an annual celebration of huge proportions.

In fact, MardiGrass is the biggest event in Australia for international backpackers, who travel to Nimbin especially to partake in the fun and games.

Superbly fit athletes from all over the world compete in the Hemp Olympix in Peace Park on Saturday and Sunday; food critics have oral orgasms over the variety of food stalls and restaurants offering fine cuisine; shoppers dawdle in the market and in the shops for that distinctively Nimbin artefact or piece of clothing; and party people can enjoy huge entertainments all weekend.

The Peace Park stage will feature non-stop entertainment with acts like Fyah Walk, A French Butler Called Smith, Anarchist Duck, CC The Cat, King Farook, Mantlepeace, Pagan Love Cult, The Nomads, Bertha Control, Diana Anaid, OKA, and heaps more.

Mingle Park Stage has Chris Fisher, Fires From Africa, Louis Burdett, Paranoia Club and Lucky Last.

You'll need a MardiGrass armband to get into Peace Park.

The Town Hall has talks, demonstrations and on Saturday night (April 30) there’s the MardiGrass Comedy Club from 8-10pm.

You can get a weekend pass ($50), a one-day pass ($25) or a weekend pass with three nights camping at the showground ($100) from www.nimbinmardigrass.com.

With a pass you can enjoy all the fun and importance of MardiGrass. And support drug law reform.
