UK: Man who created cannabis factory awaits sentence
Cambridge News Tuesday 26 Apr 2011 Police were attending a fire at the Cave Industrial Estate, in Fen Road, Cambridge, when they noticed a smell coming out of one of the units. When officers went to investigate the site owned by Christopher Whitelaw, they reportedly uncovered 40 plants and associated equipment in what they describe as a "commercial" operation. Paul Brown, prosecuting at Cambridge Magistrates' Court, said: "It was a fully equipped cannabis factory, with all the lighting and cannabis plants at various stages of growth." However, despite Whitelaw's guilty plea, defence solicitor Monica Lentin said: "It was not a factory and it was not a commercial operation. "There has never been any suggestion or evidence to say he was dealing in anything." Magistrates told the 58-year-old, of Ashfield Road, Cambridge, that the offence of producing a controlled drug, namely Class B cannabis, is "so serious, you need greater punishment than we are able to give". He has been committed to Cambridge Crown Court for sentence and released on unconditional bail before his next hearing. Mr Brown said each plant found on April 5 this year would yield a crop of about £400 in value. Mr Brown added: "When officers started speaking to him, they noticed a heavy smell of cannabis emitting from the unit and also an electrical wire leading to another unit." When questioned, Whitelaw said he used the cannabis for himself and selective group of friends. His friends were members of bands, who used his units for practice. However Mrs Lentin said the defendant "didn't accept the figures".
