Police will break up cannabis rally

Jakarta Post

Thursday 05 May 2011

The City Police have threatened to break up a rally planned for Saturday to support a cannabis legalization initiative.

City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Baharuddin Djafar said that police would not issue a permit for the street rally as it would coincide with the 18th ASEAN Summit.

"We have yet to receive any official request for the rally until now," Baharudin told reporters.

A group called Lingkar Ganja Nusantara (Nusantara Marijuana Network) said it would stage a street rally on Saturday to push for the legalization of marijuana.

The group argued that cannabis could be used in cancer treatment procedures and could also work as an anti-inflammation drug. As of now, marijuana is listed as an illegal substance in the Law on Narcotics.
