Czech: Million Marihuana March staged in Prague

Prague Daily Monitor

Sunday 08 May 2011

Some 6,000 people attended the Million Marihuana March for legalisation of marihuana for medical and "recreational" purposes in Prague Saturday, the police told CTK.

The marchers walked through the Prague centre, the police said, adding that there were no incidents.

The event, that involved some concerts and entertainment, lasted till the evening.

Czech proponents of legalisation of cannabis meet regularly in early May. This time it was for the 14th time.

"We are demonstrating against criminalisation of hemp and its users. We ask the government to put an end to this preposterous war against hemp," organisers said in a brief speech.

"Give us back our hemp and respect our laws," they added.

Accompanied by loud music and under clouds of smoke from tobacco as well as marihuana cigarettes, the protesters set out on a march through the Prague centre.

The commanding police officer estimated the number of demonstrators at about 5500-6000, while organisers said there were more of them.

"There were certainly more than 6000 of us," organiser Robert Veverka said.

Organisers offered marihuana products, from textile made of hemp to hemp beer at tens of stalls.

They also distributed marihuana seeds and staged a petition demanding legalisation of marihuana.

Similar Million Marihuana Marches are held in other world metropolises across the world Saturday.
