Gibraltar: Launch Men Arrested

The Gibraltar Chroncile

Tuesday 10 May 2011

Two men who allegedly beached a fast launch in Sandy Bay were arrested as they made their way toward town on foot at the weekend.

The rigid hull inflatable boat is of the type that is banned in Gibraltar and the two were said to have run the vessel onto the beach after it started taking on water.

The men, a Spanish national and a Moroccan, were picked up by police after people in the area reported seeing the vessel on the beach.

Jorge Andres Morón Blanco, 32, and Abdel Ouahed Zarad, 19, were jointly charged with operating a fast launch without a licence and importing a prohibited vessel.

Neither of the men was carrying documentation at the time and both were also charged with offences stemming from this.

Sr Morón Blanco was further charged with importation and possession of 12.5 grams of cannabis resin which was found on his person.

The Spanish man was additionally charged with dangerous navigation and obstructing police, though both these latter charges related to a separate incident last February.

They appeared before the Magistrates' Court yesterday, where Sr Morón Blanco was granted bail conditional on a £5,000 cash deposit.

Mr Ouahed Zarad was remanded in custody.

The case was adjourned to a later date.
