UK: Jail for Little Canfield cannabis farmers
Herts and Essex Observer Tuesday 10 May 2011 Cannabis genericChelmsford Crown Court was told that the defendants were involved in producing the drugs, which would have been part of a £300,000 annual "turnover". When police raided the premises at Almaro Bungalow, Hamilton Road, Priors Green, on January, 28, this year they found 209 plants worth about £50,000. Stuart Ellis, 39, of Longfield, Harlow, and Lee Bridger, 42, of Colvers, Matching Green, who admitted producing the drug, were told by Judge Anthony Goldstaub QC: "It was a commercial factory." Samantha Lowther, prosecuting, told the court yesterday (Monday, May 9): "Police attended Hamilton Road, Little Canfield, on January 28 - both were present at a significant cannabis factory. "There were seven rooms each with a cultivation 'set-up' and there were 209 plants recovered. A street value placed on them is £50,000 and the annual turnover involved would have been £300,000. "As well as the plants, there was hydroponic lighting and Ellis, who was found in the kitchen wearing gloves, said 'I'm glad you've caught me'. " However, Miss Lowther said Bridger tried to escape, but was caught. At Ellis's address, £5,000 cash and ducting used in the set-up was found. Both men had previous convictions involving drugs, Ellis for smuggling £100,000 ecstasy through the Channel Tunnel. The court was told that he had a "significant" cannabis problem, while Bridger had borrowed £2,000 from a loan shark and his debt had increased to £7,000. Sentencing them, Judge Goldstaub said: "It was a modest, but nonetheless productive cannabis factory. Your precise roles are unclear, but you two are an established part of the drug framework." http://www.hertsandessexobserver.co.uk/Dunmow-Stansted/Jail-for-Little-Canfield-cannabis-farmers-09052011.htm
