Australia: Users deny mental health risks of cannabis

The Australian

Thursday 12 May 2011

A NEW survey has found most people believe cannabis is a drug with no serious health implications and that those at greatest risk of long-term damage are the most likely to underestimate the dangers.

The research, conducted by community support group The Richmond Fellowship has found one in five people aged between 16 and 24 have used cannabis, and almost three quarters of users think cannabis is a so called "soft drug".

Richmond Fellowship CEO Pamela Rutledge says the results are concerning as there is established research to show a link between cannabis and mental illness, particularly in young people.
