Taxi license refusal over cannabis caution upheld

AN AYLESBURY driver who was cautioned for possessing cannabis more than three years ago has lost a court appeal for a license to work.

Bosses at Aylesbury Vale District Council turned down Wajed Mahmood's application for a taxi license after a Criminal Record Bureau search revealed he had been cautioned in June 2006, and again in January 2008.

Mr Mahmood did not disclose the 2006 offence when he applied to the council in June last year.

AVDC ruled that he was not a fit and proper person to hold a licence.

At a hearing at Aylesbury Magistrates Court last week, his appeal was turned down.

The council was awarded costs of £500.

Following the ruling, licensing manager Peter Seal welcomed the decision, saying: "Local people have a right to expect the vehicle they are getting into is driven by a competent and responsible person."
