Malta: Vegetable hawker jailed six years for cannabis trafficking

The Malta Independent

Thursday 19 May 2011

Vegetable hawker Anthony Calleja, 26 from Birkirkara, was yesterday jailed six years and fined €15,000 by Mr Justice Michael Mallia after admitting to possessing 927 grammes of cannabis resin in circumstances which denoted that the drugs were not for his own exclusive use.

An estimation of the drugs' street value amounted to €5,932.

Should Mr Calleja opt against paying the €15,000 fine, he would have to serve a further 12 months in jail.

Mr Calleja, who chose to admit to the charges rather than face a trial by jury, and who was defended in court by lawyer Franco Debono, had been granted bail in January 2009 following his arrest on 10 December 2008. He was working as a rubbish truck driver at the time.

The prosecution, led by Police Inspector Norbert Ciappara, told the court how on the day of Mr Calleja’s arrest, members of the police’s drug squad unit were stationed to carry out observations in Balzan and Birkirkara.

At one point, they noticed Mr Calleja coming out of a garage and carrying with him a small paper bag. Mr Calleja then entered a car, a Peugeot, and drove in the direction towards Lija and Birkirkara. He was soon stopped by the police who, after searching the car, found the paper bag which Mr Calleja had placed in the vehicle's boot, containing the cannabis resin.
